Step by step!! ...Oooo baby!!

Wow! Two blog posts back to back!? I know...that shit cray! Anyways, I just finished up another drawing of Black Ninja, but I decided to do a little step by step process since I've never done one before. I won't go into excruciating detail because...well, that takes to long. So I'm just gonna post up the drawings and call it a day.

Step 1-2: This drawing started with a little warm up. Once I found the pose i liked most, I blew it up, cleaned up a little, and added some structure and minute details.

Step 2-3: After I was satisfied with the rough, I cleaned it up, but instead of adding some color, I added the shading and eyes instead. I though it looked really cool, and I was gonna stop there...

...I didn't.

I had a lot of fun doing this one, and it went a a lot faster now that I knew what he was gonna look like, and I think the pose and overall drawing is stronger than the previous one. Well I'm off to go play some games or something! Deuces!!

Back in Black

What's good party people! Just had the laziest/ "productive" Saturday. I spent the entire day drawing in my pee jays on a diet of pizza and beer. Life is good!

I had a long discussion about all my story ideas with my buddy Shawn the other night. We mostly talked about how I haven't been working on them all that much as of late and that I should stop ignoring them like they where neglected step children. So I pretty much spent the entire day sketching and trying to redesign my first created character; Black Ninja!

I won't go into detail about the actual story (maybe next time) but the initial concept was based off my ninja Halloween costume my grandmother made for me 15 years ago! I've done a bunch of designs for this character over the years, so I tried to bring it back to it's initial roots. The original costume was black and yellow hence the color scheme, but I tried to give it a few traditional ninja elements like the fishnet shirt and tabi boots. I use to draw him a lot with a long red scarf, but that's been done to death with other ninja designs so I decided to forgo the scarf and give him a nice ripped hoodie instead.

This is far from being the final draft of the character as I'm sure I'll find areas to make the design stronger, but I'm happy with it overall. It's like I'm saying hello to an old friend :)

Later guys!

Enter 2012!!

Happy New Year Guys and Gals!! I hope everyone had a wonderful 2011 send off and welcomed 2012 with roar!! The last 6 weeks of 2011 where pretty damn cool. I got a new Cintiq and I've been drawing on it non-stop. Eliminating the whole scanning process is such a blesing. I just open up photoshop, start doodling, and if I draw something I like, I blow it up, make my fixes, clean it up, color it and voila! A finished drawing. I can't wait to revisit some of my old drawings and finally give them a proper polish! But until that day arrives, I'll just show you guys the drawings I've been working on over the holidays:

1) The first drawing was a Christmas gift for my girlfriend. She was a Santa to a lot of ppl this year (including myself) so I decided she should look the part!

2) Second drawing was for my friend Liz! It was her birthday and I wanted to do a little something special. Also, one of my friends has been doing this for a lot of our friends lately so I decided to do the same. As for the hash-tag, she's a Nurse; and as you all know, Nurses are Bawlin'. They Bawl so hard that some might even say Mother F*ckers want to fine them. True Story.

3) Some of you might recognize this drawing. I drew it up for my buddy John a couple of years ago, and finally got around to finishing it, thus living up to my promise I made to him years ago! Also, check out his music. The man knows his stuff!!

Well, that's all for now. I gotta go back to cleaning my room and taking care of some loose ends before I start work tomorrow. First day at a new studio! Laterz!!

I come bearing Art Stuff!

What's up party people. I got some new artwork to show you and now that have some free time, I felt it was time to post it! But first and update. I got a Tablet PC, and took my first major step into the digital medium! Now I get to sketch, animate and post it up without the use of my scanner! I'm hoping it makes the whole posting on my blog thing a little easier and less time consuming. Alright, let's get to it:

video

I had a chance to work on a traditionally animated show for a few months, and got to work on a test for a fighting game. While I didn't land the fight game gig, working on both those projects helped rekindle my love for traditional animation. So consider this little 2 second clip the first of many more to come. I realised that doing action is what I love and that's the path I want to take with my career! I'll be cleaning up this piece in the weeks to come, but for now; enjoy a naked blue man doing a Kamehameha Wave!

He is vengeance, he is the night, he. is. Batman!! Just a few more weeks till Arkham City!! I'm as giddy as a school girl...pig tails and all. Hmm, I should draw that.

The next set of drawings where interesting for me. The first one was done for this project that was in development at a studio I worked for. They asked everyone in the studio to draw stuff for it to see what we would come up with. That's what I did, but I ended up leaving before I could submit it. The next drawing is of Sagat of Street Fighter fame. I usually draw the Shotos (Ryu, Ken & Akuma) so I decided to change it up abit.

Earlier this year, a buddy of mine and I where having a debate over who would win: Metabee or Megaman. We each did a drawing of them in combat; this is how I think the fight would play out. My biggest regret with this piece however, is that I was so focused on having Metabee lose and making sure he looked accurate that I didn't push the designs of either character enough. If I ever re-did this drawing, I would have more fun with it.

Here's a random zombie, cleaning while listening to music on his iPod.

And finally, last but not least, my interpretation of a Midi-chlorian. Also know as one of the dumber things to come out of the prequel trilogy of Star Wars. Acording to Obi-Wan, Anikan's Midi-chlorian count was OVER NINE THOUSAAAAAAND!!!

Haha! Full Circle!

Achievement unlocked: Take a year to update!!

Ok, first things first: to the people that actually follow my blog and support what I do, I apologize! I swear, by the Power of Greyskull, I will NEVER take that long to update again! You have my word!!

Whew, I gotta say though, 2010 has been a very...interesting year to say the least. Been going through a lot of changes lately. Sadly, none of these changes involved being bit by a radio active spider but we still got 2 months to go in the year so keep your fingers crossed!! Anyways I'll get into that next time! Right now, I think I owe you guys some sketches! I'm gonna be honest, 2010 has been a very slow year for me in terms of drawing, so this wont be a massive sketch dump, but I did manage to find a few gems here and there:

Some things never change, and my love for superheroes (and Megaman) is a perfect example of that! I recently tried getting into character design at work, but my boss said that, while I can draw, I need more range. Captain America and Megaman are my attempts at breaking away from my usual style, and going a little more cartoony! The others are a return to form, I really liked how Superman turned out, he looks animation friendly! Also, the Batman drawing just makes me laugh because that poor thug is about to become the caped crusader's bitch! This was inspired by the Batman: Arkham Asylum game that came out last year. So excited for the sequel!

I think anyone who can draw can relate to what I'm about to say: "Hey dude, you think you can draw me one day?" Earlier this year, I decided to make good on my promises and made a list of people I had to draw. It would have forced me to draw (and finish/color my drawings) more often and I would have made my friends happy in the process. Two birds, one stone! Well so far, I've completed 2 out 11 drawing of said list and I've got...2 months to finish the rest of them! No big!

...oh and John, if you're reading this: Yours will be the first one I finish!! Thanks for being so patient!!

Oooh, relationships! Let's be honest here guys and gals, we've all felt like this at some point, lol.

We all have our idea of the perfect mate, or in this case "Dream girl". Let me introduce you to mine!! She's fully decked out in the latest of geek chic fashion, and she comes baring gifts: comic books, video games, and (in my opinion) the coolest pop culture reference a girl could use to introduce herself! (If this looks/sounds like anyone you know, hook a brotha up!!)

**bonus points if you can point out all the geeky references**

I drew this a couple of months ago, and made a few touch ups before I posted it, and while I still like the way it turned out, I really want to redraw this, because I thought of a few things that could make this funnier, and a stronger drawing overall.

So that's all for this week Ladies and Gents! Hope you guys liked ma stuff, and I'll see you all...say, same time next year? OK? Cool!!
Just kidding...I hope!

The Prodigal Procrastinator returns!!!

Hey wasup everyone. I'm back, with a nice lil' update, so I'll cut the chatter and get to the "good" stuff. COWABUNGA!!

I figured I'd start of with some Turtle Power. I used to be a huuuge fan of the turtles when I was a kid. Eventually, the Trasnformers won the battle of favorite childhood cartoon series, but the turtles will always hold a special spot in my heart. Leo was, and still is my favorite turtle. Why?? Because he had swords and he was the leader. (What can I say, I'm attracted to power). Raph is still pretty cool, if you're into the whole "I'm an emo guy who solves all my problems with violence" type. I like how they both turned out. I wanted to make them look more teen like, and incorporate the new 3D movie style in their desings, and I think the top Leo drawings shows this off best. As for Raph, well I figured since he's the most agressive and battle hungry of the turtles, I felt he should be bigger and have some battle damage on his shell...because he cuts himself. lol

Since we're on the subject of stuff I use to watch as a kid, let's keep the band wagon going with some more nostalgia inducing drawings. First of we got the Saiyan Prince, Vegeta from DBZ. I wanted to try and draw him in my own style. Not exactly sure what my style is yet, but if I where to draw him, this is probably what he would look like. The next drawing is of He-Man, the MOST POWERFUL MAN IN THE UNIVERSE!! *punches the screen* lol, anyways here's my take on the big guy, as well as his alter ego Prince Adam. I never liked the fact that He-Man and Adam where pretty much the same guy, but with a tan and less clothing on. It's as dumb as Clark Kent wearing glasses to disguise himself, no one would fall for that. So I made Adam a scrony guy instead. I plan on fleshing this design out more in the future.

Let's face it. It wouldn't be a Chris Gage update without a bunch of sketchs of Superheroes (and villains). I have a few plans for a few of these drawings: I want to color the Joker drawing, finish the Baman sketch and possibly color it as well. I also want to redo the Hulk vs Logan drawing because I really regret not fitting the Hulk on the entire page. I also really like how Superman's face turned out. I'm reffering to the one on the right by the way. I'm gonna keep experimenting with different head shapes until I land on something that I like.

One of the things I love most about being able to draw, is that I can draw myself doing the most amazing/absurd things. I can be a wandering rogue samurai in one drawing, or surf an explosion, on a surfboard made of explosion in the next. I really want to color the explosion surf drawing, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little intimidated by the amount of works that's gonna have to go into this! It's good thing I don't know how to back down from a challenge. Unless I'm being challenged to fight Brock Lesnar...I have a feeling I'd learn pretty damn quick.

Do you know what Pacman, and Robocop have in comon? They're both mercilless badasses with extremely high kill counts. Also, they are made of gratuitous amounts of win!!

And finally, some random drawings!!
That's it for this month folks. I really want to try and make one last post before A) My birthday, or B) the end of the year. Anyways it's late and my brain is starting to stugle to make words sound pretty and stuff...that made no sense. Bed now! BYE!!
...and may the Force be with you!

I swear I didn't forget I had a Blog!!!

Hey guys!! So this is the part where I appologize for taking so long to update and come up with some long winded excuse as to why I didn't, but I didn't think of one so instead you get Drawings!! Muhahahahaa!!! 20 pages worth!! Also...Street Fighter 4...

Awesome :D

Le Enjoy!!! (I'm french!!!)

So me and my buddy Lubke had a short lived sketch night a while ago (I think we where watching Invader Zim, so totally not our fault) In any case, we had to draw a cowgirl and a Sad Grave Digger. Then I decided to add Megatron being jumped by some old lady, because I don't think we give our senior citizens enough credit.

I love drawing women. I just wish I could draw them as easy as guys and the only way to do that is to practice practice practice. So I went straight to the source. To any aspiring artists that read this: LIFE DRAWING IS IMPORTANT!!! The sooner you learn this the better, trust me!!

See even after all that it's still not perfect. But I'll get there...or Die Tryin'!! (inside joke...don't ask. I've been drinking) Also the girl in the Marilyn Monroe pose is holding a gun incase you where wondering. When this drawing is finished her dress, which will be white, will also be a little see through so you can see her gun...or guns! HIYOOO!!! *self highfive*

Time to draw some dudes...doing stuff...all action like. Yeaaaaaa!!

Hmmm who's this handsome devil I drew? He looks so familiar. Oh well, who ever he is, I'm sure he is both awesome and amazing in bed...and according to these drawings, very athletic. :D

Anyways, I've always wanted to be a character in a Fighting game, so I drew myself as one. I'd probably do Taekwondo cus it's flashy and cool looking, and Kicks hurt...alot.

It wouldn't be Gage's Sketch Book Blog without the appearence of some men (and Woman) in thights. The Clark Kent and Logan drawings ended up turning out pretty good, so I added them to my portfolio (and few other pieces on here as well)

Here's a lil' somethin' somethin' I've been working on for a few years now. The concept is a super hero story set in a not so distant future. I wont really go into it now but my goal is to make this into a web comic (eventually), and if I'm lucky get it picked up as an animated series. The design of the characters are based off of people I know (friends and familly) so who knows, if I know you, you might inspire a character for this soon to be epic tale of good vs evil.
So that's all for today folks. I know I keep saying this, but I promise to do my best and update more freequently. Anyways it's late, time for bed.
